Moonshine Ridge

We cannot forget the history of the other side of the family. Jake Garland, Papaw’s papaw, was a notorious moonshiner. This home will be a fun and quirky tribute to the less-then-legal family history.

2 Bedrooms | 1.5 Bathrooms | Sleeps 6

Moonshine Ridge ...a Newly Remodeled Vacation home based on the homeplace of the Cove's notorious Moonshiner and yes, Great Grandpa, Jake Garland. This 2 Bed 1.5 Bath home sits on 12.2 acres just over the Ridge from the National Park and within walking distance to several of the area's best Trailheads including Ace Gap, Rich Mountain, and Cerulean Knob Loop. The home puts a modern twist on what was a very basic cabin of the late 1800 and early 1900s in the Bearded Cane area of Cades Cove. The original cabin without electricity, plumbing, or a kitchen would not create a very welcoming Vacation. Instead, this renovated home features a modern kitchen with stainless steel appliances and granite countertops. The island connects to the dining table to create seating for 5. While the living room which had a fireplace as the main feature, it now includes a 55" Smart Television. For entertainment, the Garland kids often played with homemade toys and games. Today's Guests get a pool table and foosball for their enjoyment. We did add a second bedroom, because, let's face it, no one wants the kids in their room, and the Garlands had 11. The Bedroom features a Queen adjustable bed and an electric fireplace with its own 42" Smart TV. The Primary Bedroom also includes a Queen adjustable bed and an electric Fireplace with a 42" Smart TV but adds an ensuite bath with double vanity and wet room including a claw foot tub and shower. Just as Mamaw used to talk about -- we included a sleeping loft for those extra kids to bring our total sleeping capacity to 6. In addition and definitely a modern convenience, we added a half bath and laundry area. No need to go outside or to the creek. On the outside, you can sit and relax on the front porch, enjoy the Hot Tub, or roast s'mores in your private Fire Pit. We invite you to come, stay, and live the story of Mamaw Nancy's childhood home and life in the Cove in the early 1900s.

Meet Jake Garland (pictured 2nd to the left) with his moonshine buddies and their still. This photo was taken of a moonshine still confiscated from Jake Garland displayed in 1914 in front of Maryville's old Blount County Jail. From left to right are Bill Dunlap, Jake Garland, and four other unidentified individuals. The Garlands were being held in the jail at the time.

Although we have yet to find an existing picture of Jake’s house, Mamaw described it in detail for Papaw to make a model. Moonshine Ridge is modeled after this rendering with an addition (since homes were so much smaller back then).

About Jake

Jake was quite the character- and known by everyone in the cove for his questionable activities. However, he was also known to never turn anyone away. Mamaw (Nancy Garland Myers) would talk about how people would come to stay for months at a time, and they would put the up and feed them the whole time. Some would help with huntin' and chores, but she felt like the same few others would just come to take advantage of their hospitality. Jake was a known womanizer as well. His first wife died young, and he did eventually remarry. But Mamaw remembered him never being without a woman nearby. She said they all thought he was very handsome, and he seemed to be the type of person that drew people to him.

Mamaw had an older sister that took over running the house after their mama died, she later died of illness. Six months after the passing of his first wife Jake got remarried to his second wife whose name was Zena (pronounced Zenie). He went on to have a bunch more kids with her. Between the 2 wives, there were 13 kids. However, no one in the family knew for sure, but they suspect there were a few other kids from his other women.
